Have been "terminated", here, as it generally applies to such cases, simply refers to the termination of his employment with the company and should not be terminated for any reason, especially when "dismissal", the conclusion of the contract or terminate his decision . Since his contract expired and has not been renewed just what the termination of his employment with that company, is to be considered in particular. The non-compete clause is still valid, ie for a period of one year may not work in the same area at a certain radius of the office of the company. Be sure to measure how this distance, but most companies have a straight line instead of reach by car. One of the doctors that went with her husband work through a great ordeal with this trick, finish paying a crazy amount of legal costs and what not. The most important thing is to carefully read the clause and the contract. If this does not work, consult a lawyer or a member of the Better Business Bureau in yourRegion (which should be able to) find information about them online.

"Separation" I think the "termination of employment" is not only the premature termination. To determine whether the sentence will be provided to a specific definition in the contract, otherwise I would advise you to wait a year and a day after it ceased to work under the contract.
Get a lawyer
in the confused ... Clause ... Non-compete clause. Typos? What are u trying to proove?
I work in a law firm ... and I was unjustly terminated ... but I'm not sure what to make of U. worries let me know
Contact a lawyer in this case. If you can not afford it, try the Legal Aid Department in your community for their support.
Consult a lawyer in your state. The non-competition clause are favored by the courts, but if the "core skills" or are irreplaceable, can be adequately performed if the duration and geographical area. It is a very general principle, however, and you should talk to someone.
I think it can on what depend on knowledge that you take with you. If the patent, then I think the ban on competition would certainly be strengthened. I think we are still in clasue even for one year. Job termination is not necessarily involve the involuntary separation. I had an engineer friend in a similar situation for you and he worked in a bar, pizza for a year before a job in the art.
