You have an OBD-I.

This is a round plug with a round plastic lid in the region of the engine compartment. Look near the firewall on the passenger side or driver side.

OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics II) was not required to be built in the U.S. car models in 1996, are out. Normally, the OBD II port on the left side should be placed from the center console on the bottom of the steering column on the scoreboard. The connector has 16 pins and is shaped trapazoidal about 1 1 / long 2 inches.

I do not know the 95, but I had a '97 740i and DAB was just the cup holders behind the wooden panel on the left. Appeared only once.
